Jens Bang-Rasmussen writes:
Henrik Rung (1807-1871) is one of the great Nordic composers from the
nineteenth century. His complete collection of chamber music fills a
deep gap in the repertoire for classical guitar and strings. There are
8 volumes (512 pages) of chamber music: guitar duets, guitar trios,
music for violin, viola, cello and guitar, and exotic combinations
written for guitar and mandolin, harpsichord and viola d'amore. Henrik
Rung is a true Romantic, and his guitar compositions are mainly
inspired by F. Sor. Most of the pieces are very short and very deep in
their expressive qualities. In certain ways Rung's music carries the
same qualities as the lute music of John Dowland. His collection of
chamber music is written very late in his life and it has a very deep
mature musical substance that fits the repertoire of a professional,
but the amateur is also capable of playing most of the pieces. The
collection is written for his children's musical training and most of
the pieces have a didactic purpose. It might provide new inspiration
for guitar teaching. A unique collection of original chamber music for
guitar very important to Danish and Nordic tradition.
The complete solo works is a
one-volume edition of 54 pages. Henrik Rung's complete solos for the
guitar form one of the most important of its kind in Danish and Nordic
tradition from the nineteenth century. The solos with opus numbers
were composed in the period 1832-1838 and date back to the period
before Rung's studies in Rome and Paris. The compositions are very
virtuoso, and are the equal of some of the finest music written for
the guitar in this period. The pieces without opus numbers date from
after his visit to Rome. Most of the titles have an Italian touch.
These small character pieces have a substantial musical depth. Rung is
here a true master, creating a strong musical expression.
