Whether the Seguidillas and More Seguidillas
might be sung by men or by women
Some of the songs have texts which are specifically
from a woman’s point of view, such as “Muchacha, y la vergüenza”
in Seguidillas and “Los canónigos, madre” in Seguidillas
and also in More Seguidillas.
Some of the songs have texts which are specifically from a man’s
point of view, such as “Mucha tierra he corrido” in More
Seguidillas (the words “ese cuerpecito” rule out it being from
a woman's point of view).
Other songs don't specify whether they are from a
man's point of view or from a woman's. The courtly love
convention is more often envisaged as being from the man's point of
view. That doesn’t mean that these songs can’t be sung by
women singers, and indeed Sor himself allowed that in the case of
“No tocarán
campanas” (More Seguidillas, no. 12), although admittedly
that was years later and in a country where they didn't speak much
Spanish.
Here’s the list of the songs in Seguidillas and More
Seguidillas with suggestions about whether the texts are from a
man's point of view or a woman's.
Seguidillas:
| 1. Cesa de atormentarme
|
man |
| 2. De amor en las
prisiones |
woman |
| 3. Acuérdate, bien mío
|
expresses conventional courtly ideas
and can really be sung by either (mío goes with bien,
it doesn’t necessarily mean that the person is masculine) |
| 4. Prepárame
la tumba |
man |
| 5. Cómo ha de resolverse
|
conventional, but could really be
either (more normal would be a man)
|
| 6. Muchacha, y la vergüenza
|
woman |
| 7. Si dices que
mis ojos |
woman |
| 8. Los canónigos, madre
|
woman |
| 9. El que quisiera amando |
conventional, but could really be
sung by either (querido doesn’t necessarily mean that
the person is masculine) |
| 10. Si a otro cuando me quieres |
man |
| 11. Las mujeres y cuerdas |
man |
| 12. Mis descuidados ojos |
man |
More Seguidillas:
| 1. Mucha
tierra he corrido |
man (because of “ese cuerpecito”;
a woman wouldn’t say that inside this convention) |
| 2. Cuando de ti me aparto |
man |
| 3. Qué costoso es el logro
|
man |
| 4. Sin duda que tus ojos
|
man |
| 5-8 |
same as 1-4 |
| 9. Cuantas naves se han visto
|
conventional, but could really be
either (more normal would be a man because it describes the
man’s role inside the convention) |
| 10 and 11. Los canónigos,
madre |
woman |
| 12. No tocarán campanas
|
man, but Sor allowed this particular
song (in the late period, and in a country where they didn’t
speak much Spanish) to be sung by the Misses Ashe |
| 13. Puede una buena moza
|
conventional, but could really be
sung by either |
| 14. Me pregunta un amigo |
man |
| 15. Lo que no quieras darme |
man |
| 16. Me preguntó mi amigo
|
this song is specifically set for two
men’s voices |
